A 4 terms
ACH Air Changes per Hour #

The number of times per hour the entire volume of air in a space is replaced. A leaky older Colorado home may naturally hit 0.6 – 1.0 ACH; a tight new-build ASHRAE 62.2-compliant home targets 0.35 ACH plus mechanical ventilation.

Why it matters: Higher ACH means faster fresh-air exchange but also faster heat and humidity loss. Balancing tightness against ventilation is the core comfort trade-off in every retrofit.

AFUE Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency #

The federal efficiency metric for gas furnaces, expressed as a percentage. A 96 % AFUE furnace converts 96 % of fuel energy to usable heat; the rest exits through the flue. Modern condensing furnaces run 95 – 98 % AFUE; older mid-efficiency units run 78 – 82 %.

Why it matters: At Front Range elevations, high-elevation derating reduces effective output; the AFUE number stays the same but installed capacity drops ~4 % per 1,000 ft above sea level.

AHRI Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute #

The independent industry body that tests and certifies matched HVAC equipment pairs. Every legitimate residential HVAC quote references an AHRI certificate number — the tested capacity, SEER2, HSPF2, and EER2 for that specific indoor + outdoor combination.

Why it matters: If your quote lists model numbers but no AHRI reference, the efficiency numbers are theoretical, not certified — a red flag worth pausing over.

Air handler #

The indoor half of a heat-pump or split-system AC — a cabinet containing the blower fan and the indoor coil that moves conditioned air through your ductwork. In gas-heated homes it's paired with a furnace; in all-electric homes it stands alone.

B 2 terms
BTU British Thermal Unit #

The energy required to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. HVAC capacity is measured in BTU/hr — a 3-ton AC is 36,000 BTU/hr of cooling capacity, and a 100k BTU/hr furnace delivers that much heat at the burner.

Blower door #

A calibrated fan mounted temporarily in an exterior door frame that measures whole-house air leakage. The result is expressed in ACH at 50 pascals of pressure. Every new-construction Colorado build must pass a blower-door test; existing homes benefit from one before major HVAC upgrades.

C 3 terms
Combustion analysis #

A diagnostic that measures the composition and temperature of a gas furnace's flue gases — oxygen, carbon monoxide, and stack temperature — to confirm safe, efficient burning. Performed with a calibrated combustion analyzer, not a visual check.

Why it matters: At Front Range elevation, gas furnaces need fuel and airflow adjustments during commissioning. A quote that omits combustion analysis is skipping the step that confirms the burner is tuned for where you live.

Condenser #

The outdoor unit of a split-system AC or heat pump. Contains the compressor, outdoor coil, and fan. In cooling mode it rejects indoor heat outdoors; in heat-pump heating mode it absorbs outdoor heat and pumps it indoors.

COP Coefficient of Performance #

Heat-pump heating efficiency at a specific outdoor temperature. A COP of 3.0 means the unit delivers three units of heat energy per unit of electrical input — 300 % 'efficient' by first-law accounting. Cold-climate heat pumps hold COP 2.0+ down to 5 °F.

D 2 terms
Damper #

A movable plate inside a duct branch that opens or closes to redirect airflow. Zoning systems use motorized dampers to send conditioned air to specific rooms on demand rather than treating the house as one thermal zone.

Duct static pressure #

The resistance to airflow inside a duct system, measured in inches of water column (in wc). Residential systems target 0.5 in wc external static pressure at the blower. Higher static pressure means the blower works harder, wears faster, and delivers less usable airflow.

E 3 terms
ECM Electronically Commutated Motor #

A variable-speed DC motor used in modern air-handler blowers. ECM blowers ramp between 25 – 100 % of full speed, matching airflow to demand and cutting fan-energy use 50 – 75 % vs older PSC motors.

EER2 Energy Efficiency Ratio (2023 test procedure) #

Cooling efficiency at a single design condition (95 °F outdoor, 80 °F indoor with specified humidity). Where SEER2 averages efficiency across a season, EER2 measures peak-load efficiency. Xcel and 25C incentive tiers reference both.

ERV Energy Recovery Ventilator #

A balanced mechanical-ventilation unit that exchanges stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air while recovering both heat and moisture from the outgoing stream. Preferred in Colorado's dry winter climate because it doesn't dump indoor moisture the way an HRV does.

Why it matters: In a tight new-build Front Range home, an ERV meets ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation requirements without turning your house into a dry-air chamber.

H 5 terms
Heat exchanger #

The metal chamber inside a gas furnace where combustion happens on one side and indoor airflow crosses the other. It transfers heat without mixing combustion gases into the airstream. Cracks in the heat exchanger are a hard safety issue — the unit doesn't run until it's replaced.

HEPA High Efficiency Particulate Air #

A filter certified to capture 99.97 % of particles at 0.3 microns. True HEPA requires a purpose-built filter cabinet with sealed bypass — a HEPA filter cannot be dropped into a standard 1-inch furnace filter slot.

HSPF2 Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (2023 test procedure) #

Heat-pump heating efficiency across a full heating season, expressed as BTU heat delivered per Wh electricity consumed. Region V (mountain states including Colorado) uses the coldest test bin. HSPF2 8.1+ typically qualifies for the top Xcel and CEE tiers.

HRV Heat Recovery Ventilator #

A balanced mechanical-ventilation unit that recovers heat but not moisture. Well-suited to humid climates, less common in Colorado — most Front Range installs prefer an ERV for its moisture-transfer behavior.

Humidifier #

A device that adds moisture to indoor air, typically via evaporation across a wick (bypass) or steam generation (steam humidifier). Whole-home humidifiers install on the ductwork; portable humidifiers serve single rooms.

K 1 term
kWh Kilowatt-hour #

The unit of electrical energy on your utility bill. One kWh is 1,000 watts running for one hour. Xcel Colorado residential rates in 2026 average roughly 14 – 18 cents per kWh depending on tier and time-of-use enrollment.

L 1 term
Load calc (Manual J) #

The ACCA-published procedure for calculating room-by-room heat gain and heat loss for a specific home. Produces a required BTU/hr capacity that replaces rule-of-thumb sizing. Should accompany every full-replacement HVAC quote in Colorado.

Why it matters: At 6,000+ ft elevation with dry air and dramatic temperature swings, generic sizing tables consistently oversize by 30 – 50 %. Manual J is the fix.

Manual D #

The ACCA duct-sizing procedure. Sizes each duct run for the airflow (cfm) the Manual J load calc demands, using the target static pressure at the blower. Retrofits often reveal that existing ductwork is 20 – 30 % undersized for a modern high-efficiency system.

Manual S #

The ACCA equipment-selection procedure. Takes the Manual J load and picks a specific make/model/tonnage that matches — not oversizes — the calculated demand. Together, Manual J + S + D produce a right-sized, right-airflow, right-ducted design.

MERV Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value #

The ASHRAE 52.2 filter-efficiency rating scale, 1 – 20. Residential filters typically span MERV 5 – 13; MERV 13 is the practical target for wildfire-smoke and allergy performance in a standard 1-inch slot.

N 1 term
NATE North American Technician Excellence #

The primary independent certification for residential HVAC technicians. NATE-certified means the technician passed rigorous exams in specific specialties (heat pumps, gas heating, air distribution, etc.) and maintains continuing-education credits.

R 3 terms
R-410A #

The refrigerant used in most residential AC and heat-pump equipment sold from ~2010 through 2024. EPA began phasing R-410A out in January 2025 in favor of lower-global-warming-potential blends. Existing R-410A systems remain legal to service and repair.

R-32 / R-454B #

The two lower-GWP refrigerant blends replacing R-410A in equipment sold from 2025 onward. Both are mildly flammable (A2L classification) and require modestly different service practices — technicians must be trained on the new charge protocols.

Refrigerant charge #

The precise mass of refrigerant a split-system needs to operate at rated efficiency. Overcharge and undercharge both cut efficiency 10 – 20 % and shorten compressor life. Charge is set at commissioning by measuring superheat (fixed-orifice systems) or subcool (TXV systems).

S 5 terms
SEER2 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (2023 test procedure) #

The federal cooling-efficiency metric, revised in 2023 to include a static-pressure penalty (0.5 in wc external) that more closely mirrors real ductwork. A 16 SEER unit typically publishes 15.2 SEER2 — same equipment, tougher test.

Staging (single / two / variable) #

How many discrete output levels a compressor or burner has. Single-stage = full-on or full-off. Two-stage = high or low. Variable-speed (aka inverter-driven) modulates continuously between 25 – 100 %. Variable-speed equipment costs more but runs quieter, longer, and dehumidifies better.

Static pressure #

Duct static pressure. See separate entry — the resistance to airflow inside a duct system. Measured in inches of water column at the blower.

Subcool #

The temperature difference between the refrigerant liquid line temperature and its saturation temperature at that pressure. Used to verify proper refrigerant charge on TXV-equipped systems. Typical target: 8 – 12 °F.

Superheat #

The temperature difference between the refrigerant vapor line temperature and its saturation temperature at that pressure. Used to verify proper refrigerant charge on fixed-orifice systems. Target varies by outdoor and indoor conditions per manufacturer chart.

T 3 terms
Thermostat classes (non-programmable, programmable, smart, learning) #

Non-programmable = single setpoint. Programmable = scheduled setpoints by day and time. Smart = Wi-Fi connected with app control. Learning = smart plus adaptive occupancy/behavior algorithms. Compatibility with staged heat pumps matters — some smart thermostats mishandle two-stage or variable-speed equipment.

Ton #

HVAC capacity unit. One ton = 12,000 BTU/hr of cooling. Residential systems are typically 1.5 – 5 tons; a typical 2,500 sqft Castle Rock home lands around 2.5 – 3 tons after a proper Manual J.

TXV Thermostatic Expansion Valve #

A refrigerant-metering device that modulates refrigerant flow into the indoor coil based on evaporator superheat. Better performance across variable load than a fixed-orifice metering device. Required for most SEER2 15+ equipment.

V 1 term
Variable-speed compressor #

See staging. An inverter-driven compressor that modulates output continuously between about 25 % and 100 % of rated capacity. The current gold standard for heat pumps and premium ACs — quiet, efficient, and stable at part load.

X 1 term
Xcel Colorado (PSCo) #

Public Service Company of Colorado — the Xcel Energy operating subsidiary that serves most of Douglas County, the south Denver Metro, and much of the Front Range. Runs the residential heat-pump and equipment rebate programs referenced throughout this Learning Center.

Z 1 term
Zoning #

Dividing a home's HVAC service into two or more independently controlled zones, typically via motorized dampers and a zoning controller. Solves the classic 'upstairs is 8 °F hotter than the main floor' problem in two-story Castle Rock homes.
