Wildfire smoke doesn't just make outdoor air unpleasant — it puts real, measurable wear on the HVAC equipment inside your home. Every summer Colorado Bear runs a wave of "the AC just doesn't feel right anymore" calls in September and October, and roughly nine out of ten are traceable to the same three or four things smoke season does to a residential furnace or heat pump. The good news: the recovery playbook is straightforward, cheap, and if you run it in October you almost always dodge the January cold-snap breakdown that fried-blower-motor systems love to deliver.
What does smoke season actually do to your HVAC?
Three mechanical effects, in the order they show up:
- Filter loading accelerates 2 – 3×. The PM2.5 particulate load in wildfire smoke is much finer than typical dust and pollen — small particles pack tighter and load the filter media much faster. A MERV 13 filter that would normally hold up 60 – 90 days in a Colorado home loads in 30 – 45 during smoke season. A loaded filter drives up static pressure at the return.
- Coil and blower biofilm. The particulate that makes it past the filter — plus whatever slipped through gaps around a loose filter housing — deposits on the cold, wet evaporator coil during cooling operation. Wildfire particulate is oily / tarry rather than dry, so it forms a sticky film on coil fins instead of just accumulating as loose dust. That film insulates the heat exchange and reduces the coil's capacity by measurable amounts.
- ECM blower stress. Higher static from a loaded filter (and, over time, a fouled coil) makes the blower spin harder for the same CFM. ECMs are variable-torque and will supply the effort automatically, which is a design strength — but the motor windings and bearings run hotter, and cumulative wear over multiple smoke seasons is real. It's how a 15-year expected-life blower ends up dying at year 11 in a Colorado home.
Compound effect after a bad smoke summer: 5 – 15 % lower effective capacity, higher energy use, a "sluggish" feel that homeowners have a hard time putting into words, and equipment components running hotter than nameplate. None of it is catastrophic in isolation. The catastrophic outcome is when a cold snap in December calls on a heat pump that's been degraded by smoke season and the compressor decides that's the moment to fail.
Wildfire smoke is a wear amplifier. It doesn't kill HVAC directly — it makes the next stress event more likely to.
The recovery playbook, in order
1 · Replace the filter (immediately, then again in 45 days)
The single highest-value action a homeowner can take after a smoky August or September is putting a fresh MERV 11 – MERV 13 filter in the return, and marking the calendar to check it again in 45 days rather than 60 – 90. During any active red-flag smoke event, run the system in "fan on" or "circulate" mode with that MERV 13 filter — the blower cleans every air change, not just the cooling / heating cycles. 2 · Inspect the blower wheel and clean if needed
A technician pulls the blower door in about 15 minutes and inspects the blower wheel for buildup. A light powdery coating is fine; a heavy dust-glaze or a sticky film means it needs to come out for cleaning. Cleaning a blower wheel is a 60 – 90 minute service task ($200 – $350 depending on cabinet layout) and restores original CFM. Once every 3 – 5 years for most Colorado homes; annually for homes in the Palmer Divide corridor where smoke and dust are unusually heavy.
3 · Inspect the evaporator coil
With the blower out, the evaporator coil is visible. A tech uses a flashlight and a small mirror to look at fin condition and check for visible film. A light film cleans with a coil rinse ($150 – $300 as an add-on to a fall tune-up). A heavy film — dark discoloration, oily deposits, matting between fins — requires a proper coil cleaning service ($400 – $700) and the coil comes out of the cabinet or gets treated in-place with a professional cleaner.
Warning sign: an evaporator coil that's visibly fouled at year 5 or 6 of equipment life on a system that's had good filtration means one of three things — the filter housing is leaking bypass air, MERV rating has been too low for the local air quality, or the filter change cadence has been too long. Fix the upstream problem before spending on the coil cleaning.
4 · Measure static pressure at the plenum
A calibrated manometer at the plenum takedown gives an external static pressure (ESP) reading in inches of water column. Nameplate ESP on most modern furnaces and air handlers is 0.5 in wc; healthy operation is 0.4 – 0.65. If we measure 0.75 or higher after filter and coil have been addressed, ductwork is the real problem — undersized returns, kinked flex, or crushed trunk lines. See ductwork red flags.
5 · Verify refrigerant charge and combustion (fall tune-up)
This is where the recovery playbook joins the annual fall tune-up. A NATE-certified tech measures superheat and subcool on cooling equipment against the manufacturer's high-elevation adjusted charge tables; measures O2, CO, and stack temperature on gas equipment against the elevation-adjusted combustion spec. If either drifted meaningfully over the summer, this is where we catch it before it becomes a January service call.
What if we had a really bad smoke year?
The 2020 fires (Cameron Peak, East Troublesome) and the 2024 Alexander Mountain fire produced weeks of AQI > 150 across the Front Range. On years like those, Colorado Bear pulls its fall tune-up schedule two weeks earlier — mid-September instead of the typical October — and adds the coil-and-blower inspection to every tune-up appointment as standard. Longer-term: upgrading your filtration
If you find yourself running through the recovery playbook every fall, the honest answer is your filtration is undersized for your climate. Three upgrades that meaningfully change smoke-season resilience:
- Media cabinet upgrade to 4-inch or 5-inch MERV 13/16. Compared to a 1-inch filter slot, a 4 – 5 inch pleated media cabinet gives you 4× the filter surface area — meaning higher MERV without pushing static pressure up. Installed $600 – $1,000; ROI on filter cost and blower longevity is 3 – 5 years.
- Whole-home HEPA bypass. A dedicated HEPA filter housing (installed as a bypass or dedicated loop) runs a fraction of the airflow through a true HEPA element continuously, complementing the main MERV 13 filter. Installed $1,500 – $2,800; strongly recommended for homes with respiratory-sensitive occupants.
- ERV with pre-filtration. An energy recovery ventilator with an outdoor-air pre-filter lets you introduce controlled fresh air (which the tight envelope of a modern Colorado home needs anyway) with MERV 13-cleaned intake, so smoke season doesn't force the choice between "windows closed" and "fresh air." Installed $2,500 – $5,000.
The recovery playbook fixes the damage; the upgrade path reduces how much damage happens next time. Either one is a real move. Both together is what a home with respiratory-sensitive occupants and a family that plans to stay put deserves.
