Every HVAC system makes noise. That's not a defect — it's mechanical equipment moving air through a home. The question is which noises are your system working correctly and which are early warnings of a failure worth catching. A NATE-certified tech running the diagnostic-triage playbook can usually name the sound and the cause in the first thirty seconds. This article is that playbook, translated to homeowner language, so you can decide whether the noise you just heard is normal Colorado operation or the reason to schedule service.
The sounds a healthy Colorado HVAC makes
Duct expansion "thump" at startup
When the furnace fires or the AC starts, conditioned air begins moving through ductwork that's been sitting at ambient temperature. Sheet metal expands or contracts as it warms or cools, and larger trunk sections make audible pops or thumps as they do. This is loudest in ductwork that runs through unconditioned space (attics or crawlspaces) because the temperature differential is largest there. One or two soft thumps within the first minute of a heating or cooling cycle is normal. Repeated banging, or a persistent single-loud "BOOM" every startup, is not — see the failure sounds below.
Blower harmonic hum
A steady low-frequency hum during operation, coming from the mechanical closet, is the blower motor doing its job. Modern ECM blowers hum at a range of frequencies depending on RPM; older PSC motors hum at a more constant 60 Hz frequency. Both are normal. What isn't normal is a vibrating rattle, a squeal, or a hum that gets louder over the course of the cycle — those point at bearings, mounting, or belt issues (though residential furnaces rarely have belts).
Heat pump defrost
In winter, a heat pump periodically reverses its cycle briefly to melt frost off the outdoor coil. The sound: a "whoosh" as the reversing valve activates (maybe 1 – 2 seconds), then the outdoor unit running quietly for 4 – 10 minutes with occasional metallic "tinks" as the coil ice cracks and drops. Then another whoosh as it reverses back to heating. Modern inverter-driven heat pumps (Daikin Fit, Daikin Aurora, Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat) do this quietly. Older single-speed heat pumps announce it loudly. Either way, the defrost cycle itself is normal.
Compressor start-up
An AC or heat pump compressor starting draws a large inrush current and produces a distinctive "hum-and-click" as the contactor engages and the compressor spins up. On modern variable-speed inverter compressors, this sound is subdued — a soft click and gradual ramp-up. On single-speed units, it's a hard click and a sudden hum. Both are normal for their equipment class. What's not normal: repeated clicks with no compressor engagement (see the failure sounds).
Outdoor fan cycling
The outdoor fan on your AC or heat pump cycles on and off as needed based on outdoor temperature and refrigerant demand. On single-speed units, the fan is either fully on or fully off. On variable-speed units, the fan ramps smoothly between speeds. Neither is a problem. On heat pumps in defrost mode, the outdoor fan turns off during the defrost portion — that's why heat pumps get quieter for 4 – 10 minutes and then resume normal operation.
The sounds that mean pick up the phone
Delayed ignition on a gas furnace
A sharp "BOOM" (like a small firework) at furnace startup — not a soft thump — means the burner fired late. Gas was flowing before ignition; when the flame finally caught, the accumulated gas ignited in a small explosion. Causes: dirty burners, drifting flame sensor, low gas pressure, or a plugged pressure switch. This is a safety issue. The delay is usually seconds, and the deflagration is usually contained inside the burner box — but repeated delayed ignition can damage the heat exchanger. Same-day service call.
Screeching or grinding from the outdoor unit
High-pitched screech that lasts more than a few seconds after startup, or a grinding sound at any point in operation, means bearings — either the outdoor fan motor bearing or (worse) the compressor. Fan motor bearings are a $300 – $500 repair. Compressor bearing failure is usually a compressor replacement, and depending on equipment age that pushes the repair-vs-replace decision hard. Book a diagnostic before running the unit longer — running a screeching compressor accelerates the failure.
Whistling or moaning at return grilles
A whistle at the return grille while the blower is running steady-state means static pressure is elevated — the blower is pulling harder than the return can supply. Most common cause: loaded filter (check first; change if dirty). Second most common: undersized return grille. Third: elevated static from downstream ductwork issues. See ductwork red flags for the diagnostic. If the filter is fresh and the whistle persists, book a static-pressure diagnostic. Long-term elevated static shortens blower motor life measurably.
Repeated contactor click without engagement
Standing near the outdoor unit and hearing a "click-click-click" every 30 – 60 seconds with the compressor never actually running is a contactor-and-safety-cutout cycle. Usually one of two things: (1) start capacitor is failing and the compressor can't spin up, or (2) low-refrigerant safety cutout is opening because refrigerant charge dropped below the low-side threshold. Both are same-week service calls — not immediate emergencies, but running an AC that can't fully start damages the compressor. Turn the thermostat to "off" and book a diagnostic.
Rumble or vibration transferring into the house
A deep vibration you feel through the floor when the outdoor unit is running is usually a mounting-pad issue. Modern condensers ship with vibration-isolation feet or grommets that isolate the compressor from the pad. Missing or degraded isolators, an unlevel pad, or a pad that's shifted with frost heave all transfer compressor harmonics into the house structure. Fix: re-mount with fresh isolators ($150 – $300) or re-level the pad. If the vibration is severe enough to hear inside the house, it's worth addressing sooner rather than later — sustained vibration wears the compressor faster.
Water running or dripping sounds
Any audible water inside the furnace or air handler cabinet during cooling operation is a condensate drain issue. Modern equipment produces water as a byproduct of dehumidification; that water should flow out a drain line, not sit in the pan or drip into the cabinet. Plugged drains cause the pan to overflow, water damage to the mechanical closet, and (on high-efficiency furnaces with float-switch protection) system shutdown. If you hear dripping or gurgling, check the pan under the air handler. Standing water = drain call.
A healthy HVAC system is not silent — but its noises are predictable. When a new noise appears, or an old noise gets louder, that's data. Write it down and book service before it becomes the reason your system fails on a cold snap.
How loud is too loud on a modern outdoor unit?
Modern variable-speed heat pumps and AC condensers (Daikin Fit, Daikin Aurora, Bosch IDS, Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat) run 55 – 65 dBA at the property line — approximately as loud as a running dishwasher, or a normal conversation from 3 – 5 feet away. Fixed-speed budget units run 68 – 76 dBA and are noticeably louder to a neighbor. Douglas County residential noise ordinance limits nighttime noise at property lines to 55 dBA — a properly installed variable-speed unit should sit well under that limit.
If your outdoor unit is genuinely annoying your neighbors, the likely fixes: (1) upgrade to a variable-speed condenser (which the rebate stack partially funds), (2) re-mount with better vibration isolation, or (3) add a purpose-built acoustic barrier fence with sound-absorbing material. All three reduce the noise; the specific right answer depends on how much noise reduction you actually need.
What to do when you hear something new
- Take a 15-second phone video of the sound (audio is fine; the moving image helps a diagnosing tech).
- Write down when it started, whether it happens on every cycle or intermittently, and whether the system is still operating normally.
- Check the easy stuff — filter loaded? Thermostat setting recently changed? Outdoor unit clearance blocked by leaves or snow?
