Manual J, S, D — what those letters mean when someone quotes you HVAC

Three ACCA procedures, one honest quote. Here's the plain-English version of the three-letter code every full-replacement HVAC quote in Colorado should reference.

When an HVAC contractor tells you they "ran a Manual J" — or you ask them about it and they change the subject — you're brushing up against a three-letter code that governs whether the quote you're looking at is a real engineering document or an educated guess. Manual J, Manual S, and Manual D are the three ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) procedures that together define what a properly sized, properly matched, properly ducted residential HVAC install looks like. On paper it's boring standards work. In practice it's the difference between a house that runs 20-minute cycles at low stage and one that short-cycles all summer.

Here's the plain-English decoder for each of the three, why they matter in a Castle Rock or south-Denver-Metro home, and how to spot when one has been skipped.

Manual J — the load calculation

Manual J answers a single question: how many BTU/hr of heating and cooling does this home actually need? It does that room-by-room, using the specific construction of your home rather than a rule of thumb.

Inputs Manual J requires:

  • Exterior dimensions and interior floor plan (walls, doors, ceiling heights, orientation).
  • Insulation R-values in walls, ceilings, floors, and around foundation.
  • Window count, dimensions, glazing type, U-value, SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient), and orientation (which way each window faces).
  • Air-leakage rate — measured via blower-door test if available, estimated from build era and construction type if not.
  • Local design temperatures (ASHRAE 99 % winter, 1 % summer). For Castle Rock: roughly 1 °F winter design, 92 °F summer design.
  • Occupant load, plug-load, and appliance heat gains (kitchens, computer rooms).

From those, software (Wrightsoft Right-J and Elite RHVAC are the two dominant packages we use) produces a per-room load report in BTU/hr and a whole-house total. That whole-house number is what the equipment sizing should target — not a rule of thumb, not the tonnage of your existing unit, not what "usually works" in your zip code.

Why it matters in a Colorado home: Front Range construction is unusually variable. Two neighboring houses of similar square footage can have Manual J loads 30 % apart based purely on window orientation and insulation quality. Rule-of-thumb sizing (1 ton per 500 sqft, or "match the existing") consistently oversizes Colorado equipment by 30 – 50 %. Manual S — the equipment selection

Manual J tells you the load. Manual S tells you which specific piece of equipment to install for that load. It sounds trivial ("pick a heat pump that matches the BTU/hr") but it's meaningfully harder in practice — because equipment doesn't perform at nameplate capacity across all conditions. A 3-ton heat pump might deliver 36k BTU/hr at 47 °F outdoor, 28k at 17 °F outdoor, and only 20k at 5 °F outdoor. Manual S walks the load requirement against the actual manufacturer performance data at your local design temperatures and picks a specific make / model / tonnage.

What Manual S considers that Manual J doesn't:

  • The specific manufacturer performance curves at multiple ambient temperatures — capacity, EER2, COP.
  • The sensible heat ratio (SHR) of the equipment at design cooling temperature — critical in dry climates like the Front Range, where over-dehumidifying wastes energy.
  • Part-load performance at 25 %, 50 %, and 75 % capacity — where a modulating or two-stage unit spends most of its life.
  • The AHRI certified rating for the exact matched indoor + outdoor pair (not just the outdoor unit's nameplate).

The fingerprint of a proper Manual S selection is the AHRI certificate reference number on your quote. See our quote reading guide for the full checklist. If a quote lists an outdoor unit model number but no matched indoor coil AHRI reference, the efficiency numbers on that quote are theoretical, not certified — and the Manual S step almost certainly wasn't done.

Manual J says "how big." Manual S says "which one." They're not the same procedure and skipping the second wastes the first.

Manual D — the duct design

Manual D takes the Manual J room-by-room load and the Manual S equipment's blower curve, and produces a duct-system design: trunk sizes, branch sizes, register sizes, static pressure targets, and equivalent-length calculations for each run.

Manual D matters for two distinct outcomes:

  1. Airflow distribution. Every room gets the CFM it's designed to get. No hot upstairs, no starving bedroom at the end of the run, no over-served living room that becomes an icebox in summer.
  2. Static pressure budget. The ductwork imposes a "friction cost" on the blower — Manual D ensures that friction stays within the equipment's design external static pressure (typically 0.5 in wc). Ductwork that busts the static budget makes the blower fight the system, which shortens equipment life and increases noise.

On new construction in Douglas County, Manual D is required by IECC 2021 code. On existing-home retrofits, it's the sanity check that answers "will the existing ductwork actually deliver the CFM this new equipment needs?" The Manual D check on a retrofit can be as simple as a static-pressure measurement at the plenum (if the current system was properly designed) or as involved as a full duct-blaster test and redesign (if it wasn't).

Do all three always get done?

For a full-system replacement or new install, they should. In practice:

  • Full replacement of both furnace and AC / heat pump: Manual J and Manual S every time; Manual D on any project where ductwork is being modified or where existing ductwork is known to be undersized / leaky.
  • New construction: All three, required by IECC 2021.
  • Furnace-only replacement (AC stays, ductwork stays): Manual J is still worth running to confirm sizing; Manual S covers the specific furnace model; Manual D verifies the blower's CFM output matches the existing duct design.
  • Diagnostic or repair calls: None required. You're servicing what's already installed.

An honest full-replacement quote in Castle Rock in 2026 references at least a Manual J load number and an AHRI matched-pair certificate. Anything less and you're relying on the contractor's judgment rather than documented engineering. What should I ask for in writing?

Three items on any full-replacement HVAC quote:

  1. The Manual J load report — a page or two showing whole-house and per-room BTU/hr load. If it's not attached, request it. If they can't produce it, they didn't run one.
  2. The AHRI reference number for the specific matched indoor + outdoor pair being quoted. Cross-check it yourself at ahridirectory.org to confirm the SEER2, HSPF2, and EER2 values match the marketing sheet.
  3. A duct-static-pressure measurement or a Manual D check on any project where ductwork condition is questionable.

What's Manual J in one sentence?

Manual J is ACCA's residential load-calculation procedure — it sums heat gain and heat loss room-by-room and produces the required heating and cooling capacity in BTU/hr. It's the answer to 'what size should the equipment be?' It replaces the shortcuts (square-footage-per-ton, 'match the existing') that consistently over-size Colorado equipment by 30 – 50 %.

Manual S is ACCA's equipment-selection procedure. It's the answer to 'once we know the load, which piece of equipment specifically?' A quote referencing an AHRI reference number is proof Manual S was applied.

What's Manual D?

Manual D is ACCA's duct-design procedure. It takes the Manual J room-by-room CFM requirements and the Manual S blower curve and specifies the duct layout — trunk sizes, branch sizes, register / boot sizes, static pressure at the plenum. On new construction, Manual D is required by IECC code. On retrofits, it's the sanity check that answers 'will the existing ductwork actually deliver this equipment's CFM?'

Are all three required on every quote?

For a full system replacement or new install, all three should be applied and referenced. On a like-for-like retrofit with unchanged ductwork, Manual J and Manual S are essential; Manual D is a verification check. Any quote for a full replacement that doesn't reference a Manual J is skipping the foundation — and roughly 30 – 40 % of the time in our audit sample, the recommended tonnage is wrong.

Can I look at the Manual J output myself?

Yes — always ask for it in writing on any full-replacement quote. Wrightsoft Right-J and Elite RHVAC (the two dominant packages we use) both produce a room-by-room BTU/hr report that the homeowner can read directly. If a contractor can't hand you the load report on request, they either didn't run one or don't want to show it — both are answers.
